recipe for disaster

1. An unusually high number of whales are off the California coast this September because of Global Climate Change.

2. Court gives Navy go-ahead to use sonar off coast. Citing national security, the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily reversed an earlier court order banning the Navy from conducting training exercises using high-intensity sonar. The sonar is powerful enough to cause “disorientation, inability to navigate along coastal waters and even death” of whales–according to a lawsuit brought by the Natural Resources Defense Council.

3. Scientists plan to tow in carcass of 3rd blue whale. “Eager to examine the whale’s tissue while it’s fresh, scientists are making plans to tow the carcass to shore at Naval Base Ventura County at Point Mugu.” Isn’t that like letting OJ conduct the autopsy? “The Navy has resumed sonar training off Southern California.”

It’s not really about detecting Iranian subs. It’s really about oil. The sonar can be used to detect offshore oil. That’s the bottom line. The whales merely got in the way.

The Ninth Circuit Court will hear the case against high-intensity sonar on November 5th in Pasadena, California.
